On behalf of the ICC board, I am writing to
update you on our progress, and to ask for your
continued support and involvement.
Our most visible event this fall was the "Meet
the Candidates" event that we organized on
October 12th, just two days before the Federal
election! This event featured three MPs and
their opponents from all political parties from
three key ridings of Willowdale, Thornhill, and
Richmond Hill. The event, held at the Council
Chambers of the North York Civic Centre,
attracted 200 community members, who posed
insightful and important questions to the
candidates.
One of the highlights of the event was a heated
debate between the candidates about immigration
and visa issues, related to the Iranian-Canadian
community. It became clear at the meeting that
our community's voice has begun to be heard in
Ottawa, but much work remains to be done for the
Iranian-Canadian community to achieve its
rightful place in the Canadian mosaic.
Another highlight was the knowledge and interest
that the candidates displayed about Iranian
culture and heritage and the significance of the
Iranian community in their ridings.
Building on a successful event, we at ICC will
continue to press our officials to heed the
needs of the Iranian community, so we can work
together for our greater integration into
Canada's civic and economic life.
It is our current priority to communicate to
Citizenship and Immigration Canada about the
need to modify counterproductive visitor visa
policies, and for improving the quality of
service that the friends, relatives, and
colleagues of Iranian-Canadians receive at the
Canadian embassy in Tehran.
We are currently working on a number of
initiatives aimed at bringing Canadian decision
makers from the Federal and Provincial
Governments to better grasp the potentials and
challenges of our community.
We need your support to carry on these
important tasks, and to expand our membership,
and will soon communicate with you about our
crucial upcoming programs.
In the meantime I'd urge you to please get
involve in your own organization. Get in touch
with committees who are in urgent need of your
input, ideas and involvements.
Regards,
Saeed Hariri

Iranian-Canadian Congress writes to
Canada's
Immigration Minister to protest treatment of
Iranians
The Honourable Diane Finley, P.C., M.P.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada
Ottawa, ON, K1A 1L1
September 13, 2008
Dear Minister Finley,
On behalf of the board of directors of the Iranian
Canadian Congress, I am writing to raise a number of
issues of critical concern to the Iranian-Canadian
community. The establishment of ICC was two years in
the making and benefited from the tireless efforts
of some of the most distinguished members of the
Iranian-Canadian community.
Today we have over 500 members,
and our membership is growing. Our community has
been alarmed by the suboptimal quality of service
provided to our relatives, colleagues, and friends
by your ministry's staff at the Canadian embassy in
Tehran. We have received numerous complaints about
the lack of respect with which visa applicants are
treated, and the rapid downturn in the number of
visas that are issued.
In particular, we have been informed that the
majority of invitees to three significant academic
and cultural events in Canada have been turned away,
preventing them from making what would have been
important contributions to intercultural and
academic dialogue in Canada. This trend is
especially troubling since the majority of the
cultural and academic programs damaged by the visa
restrictions, are funded by the Canadian government.
Barring of
Iranians sparks anger
Lesley Ciarula Taylor, IMMIGRATION
REPORTER, Toronto
Star
900 people sign
petition decrying Ottawa's denial of
visitors' visas for their family members
in Iran
An Iranian-Canadian grad
student at the University of Toronto has
collected 900 signatures in just a few
weeks from people like her whose
families have been refused visas to
visit. And the Iranian Canadian Congress
says it's time to make it an election
issue. |
The first of these events was the Tirgan Iranian
Festival, which was held at Harbourfront Centre in
Toronto on July 17-20. The Harbourfront Centre, as
you know, receives the bulk of its funding from the
Federal Government. This festival was the largest
festival of its kind in the history of the Iranian
diaspora and was financially supported by the
Department of Canadian Heritage, Ontario's Ministry
of Tourism, the Canada Council for the Arts, the
Ontario Arts Council, among others. Many of the key
invitees to the event, who are among Iran's leading
artists and performers, were denied visas, despite
having invitations from the festival's organizers
and from Harbourfront Centre. The second main event
of the Iranian community this summer was the
bi-annual conference of the International Society of
Iranian Studies, which was held at Toronto's Park
Hyatt Hotel on July 31-August 2.We have been
informed by this event's organizers that, similarly,
a number of Iran's most distinguished scholars, who
had official invitations from the University of
Toronto and the conference organizers, have been
denied visas and therefore cannot attend the event.
Finally, we have been informed about similar
policies regarding the 5th International Reunion of
Sharif University of Technology Association held on
August 1-4 2008 in Vancouver, BC, Sharif University,
as you know, is Iran's leading centre for science
and engineering education. We have been saddened to
discover that here, too, your ministry has imposed
collective punishment on some of the most
distinguished members of Iran's scientific community
and their interlocutors in Canada. We feel that our
relatives, friends and colleagues in Iran should not
fall victim to political squabbles.
We would like to request a meeting with you and your
staff to discuss the criteria your ministry's
representatives in Tehran use to grant or deny visas
to applicants who have official invitations from
reputable Canadian institutions, and are invited for
short visits to Canada.
Please let us know when you can meet with ICC
representatives to discuss these issues.
Regards,
Saeed Hariri President

Be Rational, think Critically

#2 (no title)
Oct 12 is your chance to have a discussion with Major
parties candidates about issues important to our community;
please participate in the democratic process; Iranian
Canadian community is a positive contributor to this country
ideals and values; as citizens we have the right to vote, to
be heard and to participate.
See you Oct 12 at North York Civic Centre from 3 to 6
Toronto star has published an article about Iranian Visa
issue, http://www.thestar.com/article/505611;
more interesting is comments left by some readers which stem
from misunderstanding and prejudice, my intention here is to
open up the floor for free brainstorming; please be rational
and lets have a civilized discussion about this very hot
topic; lets not forget that we all love this country and the
ideas it stands for.
Read the full article at:
http://iccongress.ca/
Lets start the discussion; what do you think?
Please visit the posted link and sign the petition to
protest arbitrary and discriminatory approach of Canadian
embassy in Tehran to issue visa to our families and elites
(so far 800 signature has been collected), Iranian Canadians
are contributing member of this society and as tax paying
and law abiding citizens deserve to be treated equally. So
far Immigration Canada performance and response in this
regard has been unimpressive.
It is election season, its time to be vocal and be heard.
Federal election is on its way and candidates from all
parties are working hard to court public support; here is a
golden opportunity for ICC to voice our community concerns
and demands; on top of the list are:
-
the issue of immigration and discriminatory (visa)
policies toward our community
-
professional/university degree evaluation and
recognition
-
federal/provincial assistance to various non for profit
organizations (NPO).
However before demanding our requests we got homework to do,
most of our NPOs lack resources and information on existing
federal and provincial programs and how to apply for them;
furthermore there is a chronic absence of reliable statistic
and empirical data on economical and social status of our
community.
There is a great deal of work we can and should do to draw a
clear picture of our current standing and future vision, a
vision based on enhanced status in Canadian society by
positive contribution and social integration.
Philosophers, artist, journalist and knowledge workers are
social and culture engineers whos work creates building
blocks of our heritage and culture; last summer Iranian
Canadaian community organized three important cultural,
scientific and artistic events: Tiregan Festival which by
far was one of the most important and successful cultural
festival outside of Iran (held in Toronto Harbor Front
centre); Shahnameh Millennium (held in Roy Thompson Hall,
Toronto) and University of Sharif alumni gathering in
Victoria BC (UOS is globally acclaimed and currently ranked
as one of the best universities in the world for its
undergrad electrical engineering program).
Thankfully through hard work of organizers, volunteers and
support of provincial and federal government all there
events were held successfully; however despite of federal
and provincial governments support there were many
distinguished contributors (many of them acclaimed and
recognized artist, authors and scientists) who due to lack
of cooperation from Canadian Embassy in Tehran were unable
to attend the events; in some cases they were faced with
unprofessional and rude behavior of embassy employees, which
left a black eye for Citizen and Immigration Canada.
It is not an overstatement to say that, lack of cooperation
from Canadian Embassy in Tehran undermined a great deal of
work by organizers and volunteers; which fortunately was
mitigated by hard work and dedication of all those involved.
Hopefully our community can use this election to voice its
concern to our federal government, Iranian Canadian
community is strong and willing to participate positively in
the political process, in return we need our voice to be
heard.
This is a beginning of a journey, a journey which hopefully
leads us to dialogue, collaborate, think and learn.
Democracy is an evolving process, a process that takes shape
and finds meaning in interaction of individuals and
institutions. Democracy is not a destination; it is a mean
for individuals to fulfill their potentials, for the ever
evolving and changing society to push its institution
forward, to prevent yoking of men by stringent tradition and
ideology.
