The upcoming Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC)
annual general meeting (AGM 2023) will be held
online on April 9, 2023, at 1:00 pm ET. A video
call link to attend the meeting will be shared
with the members through email in future

Please note that an election is also held for
the seven available seats on the board of
directors of the ICC. The election will be held
by online voting which has started on Sunday
April 2nd, 2023 and will end on April 9th, 2023,
at 2:00 pm. The election will be conducted
through a platform called Electionbuddy and you
have received an email from Electionbuddy with
instructions for voting.
The nomination window for the upcoming election
was closed on March 23rd, 2023, at 11:59 pm ET
and the following candidates (ordered
alphabetically) will run for the upcoming

تعرض به فرایند انتخاباتی دموکراتیک این نهاد

اکثریت اعضای هیات مدیره کنونی کنگره ایرانیان
کانادا در انتخاباتی که آزادترین، دموکراتیک ترین
و گرانترین انتخابات یک نهاد اجتماعی در جامعه
ایرانی کانادایی بود و تحت نظارت قاضی بی طرف
کانادایی برگزار میشد، انتخاب شده اند.
اما در طی دوسال گذشته، گروهی با انگیزه های
سیاسی از طریق انتشار انواع اتهامات و اخبار بی
اساس در حال گمراه کردن اعضای جامعه نسبت به این
نهاد بوده اند. اکنون این گروه با زیر پا گذاشتن
اصول دموکراتیک، خواهان تعیین تکلیف دستوری برای
کنگره ایرانیان کانادا شده اند. غافل از این که
عضویت در این نهاد برای عموم باز و غیرگزینشی بوده
و تک تک اعضا با داشتن حق رای مساوی در انتخاب
اعضای هیات مدیره و تعیین سرنوشت و جهتگیری کنگره
نقش بازی میکنند.
هیات مدیره کنگره ایرانیان کانادا ضمن رد تمامی
موارد مطرح شده به اطلاع میرساند که کنگره
ایرانیان کانادا یک نهاد کاملا عضو محور با شیوه
ای کاملا دموکراتیک بوده و در چهارچوب اساسنامه
خود فعالیت می کند. عملکرد کنگره در راستای خدمت
به جامعه ایرانی کانادایی در سال های اخیر، از
جمله فعالیت
هایش در
حمایت از دادخواهی خانواده های قربانیان پرواز
اوکراینی، بیش ازهر چیزی گویای رویکرد هیات
مدیره کنگره است، نه فرضیات و ادعاهای بی پایه.
اکنون نیز جمعی از اعضای کنگره ایرانیان کانادا
برای عضویت در هیات مدیره این نهاد داوطلب شده اند
و روند انتخابات این سازمان مطابق اساسنامه و
قوانین، به دموکراتیک ترین روش و بر طبق روند
سالیان گذشته برگزار خواهد شد.
لذا افراد امضا کننده بیانیه منتشر شده را دعوت به
احترام به اصول دموکراتیک و آرامش کرده و برای
تمامی اعضای جامعه ایرانی کانادایی آرزوی سربلندی
و موفقیت داریم.

Saïdeh (Arezu) Khadir was born in Tehran in 1970. At
the age of five, her family migrated to Montreal in
1975, where she received her primary and secondary
education. Subsequently, she was admitted to the
University of Montreal medical school, where she
graduated and obtained her specialization in Family
Medicine in 1998.
Ms. Khadir has been interested in social and
political issues since her university days, during
which she volunteered to spend a stage period in
Bolivia, assisting homeless and underprivileged
young people. Following her graduation, she became a
founding board member of the Québec Physicians for
Medicare (MQRP) and a board member of Canadian
Doctors for Medicare. Since then, she has remained
actively engaged in numerous social and political
activities, participating in various organizations,
such as Physicians for Global Survival (PGS),
Collectif Échec à la guerre, and Mouvement Québécois
pour la Paix, while concurrently practicing Family
Medicine.
Ms. Khadir's involvement with the Iranian community
dates back to 1998 when she became an active member
of the Iranian Center for Cultural and Social
Collaboration. In 2016, she became involved with
Norouz Land, a social and cultural organization
dedicated to encouraging peace and cultural
collaborations between the countries that celebrate
Norouz as their official new year. From 2016 until
the present, she has been involved with the Iranian
Canadian Congress (ICC), with her main objective
being to promote peace and prosperity for her
motherland and to encourage peaceful transformations
in Iran while respecting the integrity of Iran and
the rights of its citizens. She once stated, "Deep
in my heart, there has always been a special place
for my country of origin and the Iranian community
here in Canada."

Mona Borghei is a
Montessori teacher in Victoria British Colombia.
Mona graduated from
Allmeh Tabatabai University with a Major in Persian
Literature, which was her passion. She worked as an
editor at Amir Kabir publishing institute for a few
years and worked at different schools as a teacher.
Mona immigrated to
Canada in 2008. She decided to follow her dream of
working with young children and obtained a certificate
in Early Childhood Education in Montessori.
Mona loves children
and believes that children and young people can make big
changes not just in their communities but also globally.
Children are the only hope for humanity to secure a
better future.
As an
Iranian-Canadian who has dedicated her professional life
to educating children and building a better future, Mona
strives to help Iranian Canadian children stay connected
to their cultural roots and work toward a better and
brighter future.

همیشه عاشق فرهنگ و
ادبیات فارسی بود و تصمیم گرفت این علاقه را در دانشگاه

کار شد. همزمان تدریس در مقاطع مختلف آموزشی را دنبال کرد.
در سال 2008 به کانادا
مهاجرت کرد و از آن زمان، با اشتیاق کار با کودکان را
انتخاب کرد.
کودکان را تنها
سرمایه و راه نجات بشریت در آینده می داند و معتقد است که
با آموزش ارزش های انسانی و تمرین آن ها در دوران خردسالی،
شاهد آینده ای زیبا ترخواهیم بود.
کودکان مهاجر ایرانی
پلی میان فرهنگ ایران و کانادا هستند.منا به عنوان یک
ایرانی کانادایی که زندگی حرفه ای خود را به آموزش کودکان

I, Amir-hassan
Ghaseminejad-Tafreshi, am a faculty member at School of
Business at Capilano University. I have taught News
Media, the Public, and Democracy, Political
Communication, as well as research methods courses at
Simon Fraser University (SFU), and computer science,
machine learning, and business courses at other
universities.
As a researcher at
SFU, I have developed statistical and process models of
criminal justice system, have participated in healthcare
modeling; and have researched the impact of broadband
Internet on rural and remote communities in BC. My
publications are about society and technology
interrelationships, voting systems, citizen engagement
in democracy, media effects, modeling social systems,
science and technology studies, and high dimensional
data analysis. I received my PhD from the Faculty of
Communication, Art and Technology at SFU in 2019. I have
a Master’s in Computer Hardware, and a Bachelor’s in
Electronics, both from the Faculty of Electrical
Engineering at Sharif University of Technology.
My civic
engagement includes public lectures on the theories and
practices of democracy for Canadian and Iranian
communities in Vancouver, and I have advocated for
proportional representation as the voting system in BC.
I believe in
seeking win-win solutions in international rivalries
among regional powers and superpowers, and the formation
of closer economic relations while respecting and
understanding social realities through establishment of
closer economic and cultural interchange. Use of
diplomacy (instead of coercion) encourages solidarity,
peace, fairness, and integration. I advocate this
strategy as the moral path to solve the injustices
within societies and worldwide. I believe that
expansionism of military blocs and use force in the
multipolar world that is being formed can have
undesirable consequences of separation of inhabitants of
this tiny planet, reduction in peaceful production, and
a decline in cooperation among the humanity to solve
fundamental challenges we face.
While creating an
environment of intimidation and threat has been used by
various political players to silence the diversity of
opinion, freedom of expression is one of the fundamental
requirements of democratic discourse in a healthy public
sphere. I believe that observations during the past year
have shown that one of the most urgent roles ICC should
play for Iranian-Canadian community is to provide the
missing platform for practicing peaceful, respectful,
realistic, and rational dialog among the community
members with diverse ideological goals.
I believe, as a
Canadian, I should not invite other countries to
interfere with Canada's political affairs; and as an
Iranian, I should not invite other countries to
interfere in Iran’s political affairs. The Iranian
Canadian Congress, which is a Canadian institution, must
protect the interests of Canadian Iranians and try to
facilitate their performance, and solve their problems,
in Canada. Given that the names of the members of the
congress are public and that ICC is not registered as a
political organization, it should remain non-partisan
regarding political issues within Iran or Canada; and
let the political institutions pursue those endeavors.

IT and worked as a Freelance Web developer. Recently
I join to a well-known Retail Company.
I've been living in Canada since 2017. Since I
arrived in Canada, I have dedicated part of my time
to volunteer work. I have volunteered in youth
programs and in several immigration society
organizations.
I have strong ties to our culture, and I like to
focus my volunteer activities on Iranian immigrants
and help them to improve their situation in Canada. Therefore
I decided to nominate myself.

I am
excited to nominate myself for a director position on
the Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC) board of directors.
I am passionate about the welfare of Iranian Canadians
and believe that I can make a valuable contribution to
the organization's mission.
Having lived in Canada for 25 years, I have a deep
understanding of the challenges faced by the Iranian
Canadian community. One issue that is particularly close
to my heart is the tragic PS752 Ukraine flight disaster,
which claimed the lives of 176 innocent people,
including 50 Canadian citizens. I have been closely
following the aftermath of this event and believe that
justice for the victims and their families must be a top
priority for the ICC.
Another key focus of my work on the ICC board will be to
promote cultural exchange and understanding between
Canada and Iran. I believe that by fostering a more
positive and collaborative cultural relationship between
these two nations, we can build a brighter future for
all. I will seek to engage with Iranian Canadian
communities across the country and work to create
programs and initiatives that celebrate the rich
cultural heritage of both Iran and Canada.
In
summary, I am deeply committed to serving as a director
on the ICC board and believe that I can make a
significant contribution to the organization's mission.
My passion for the welfare of Iranian Canadians, coupled
with my relevant experience and skills, make me an ideal
candidate for this position. I look forward to the
opportunity to work with the ICC team to advance the

Currently employed in
the software industry, Mona Ghassemi received a Master’s
of Cultural Anthropology from Concordia University for
ethnographic thesis work regarding gender issues within
the Iranian-Canadian community. Living in Montreal since
the age of two, Mona has been actively involved in the
Iranian community there for many years.
Mona spent two years
on the Board of Directors of QPIRG Concordia, gaining
experience in consensus-based decision-making. Their
experience as a peer support volunteer at the Centre for
Gender Advocacy, including a one-year training period in
active listening and workshops on topics such as racism
and indigenous solidarity, increased their perspective
and empathy. Mona has also volunteered as the Montreal
host for #BecauseWeveRead, an international book club
started by Iranian-American activist Hoda Katebi, which
included outreach to the Iranian-Canadian community.
Mona has also had several media appearances where they
have taken a position against war and foreign influence
in Iran.
Mona is passionate
about anti-racism and anti-Islamophobia, dialogue and
bridge-building within the community, and solidarity
with other racialized and marginalized groups in
Canada.

I am a licensed Realtor in Canada
I am a visual artist working in painting and sculpture.
I immigrated to Canada from Iran in 1995. I have been
running my own small
business from 1996 to present.
I was part of the group that created the ICC, the
mission being to help Iranian
Canadians know their rights in Canada and improve them.
Further, to help
newcomers settle in Canada and to amplify the voice of
Iranian Canadians in the
sociopolitical landscape in Canada.
I put my effort to find a common ground in this divisive
and uncertain
atmosphere that destabilized and drained our community.

My name is Mohammad
Vahidirad, but my friends call me Mohammad Rad. I
strongly believe that discovering your ego is key to
finding your place within society. We are all part of a
community, and it is impossible to live without the
support and contributions of others.
Women, in particular,
represent a crucial source of strength in our society.
As an internationally recognized business theorist,
planner, and finance expert, I have always emphasized
practical application over empty rhetoric. My
clients-turned-friends often describe me as a tree of
prosperity, full of unique ideas and a keen analytical
mind.
While I am a
pragmatist at heart, I pride myself on being a
dependable friend and advisor. Over the past 20 years of
varied business experience, I have gained extensive
empirical and academic knowledge that allows me to
analyze different market positions and business
conditions with ease.
Years ago, I made the
decision to immigrate to Canada from Iran, which
presented a unique opportunity to expand my business.
However, I also learned the importance of staying true
to my dreams despite the challenges of adapting to a new
country. Dreams are the foundation of our achievements,
and it's crucial to hold onto them as we navigate life's
twists and turns.
My achievements speak
for themselves. I am a member of the Montreal Chamber of
Commerce, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC),
the International Court of Arbitration, the World
Chambers Federation (WCF), and the World Chambers
Congress (WCC). I am the author of "Business
with/from/in Canada" and the translator of the latest
business and economic statistics of Canada until the end
of 2022 in Iran.
In addition to these
accomplishments, I founded the Canada Iran Business
Association, the first international association between
Iran and Canada under the supervision of the Canadian
Foreign Ministry and officially registered in Iran in
the private sector. I also established Hodhod Cultural
Media, the first Persian language online media in
Canada, and served on the Board of the Iranian-Canadian
Congress in 2022.
As someone who
recognizes the value of education in various fields, I
am excited to introduce some of my educational programs
for 2022:
"Global Business
Strategy": a comprehensive course that covers all
aspects of business strategy and its implementation in
the global market.
"Leadership and Team
Management": a practical program designed to enhance

I am also running for

Shams: Upon
reviewing Mr. Shams membership history, it was
realized that his membership expired in June 2021,
and he has not renewed his membership since then.
Thus, he is currently not a member of the ICC and
does not meet the nomination criteria as outlined in
the ICC by-laws. Also, Mr. Shams did not provide a
picture of a government-issued ID, as requested in
the nomination announcement and did not respond to a
follow-up email asking him to submit this document.

Ms. Raheleh Tarani: Ms. Tarani has
provided all documents requested in the nomination
announcement. While she is currently an ICC member,
upon reviewing her membership history, it was
realized that she does not meet the
nomination criterion of being a regular member with
“good standing for at least one year prior to the
election” as outlined in the by-laws.

Mr. Mohammad VahidiRad: Mr.
Vahidirad has provided all documents requested in
the nomination announcement and has been a member in
good standing for the past year.

Mr. Arvin Zokaei: Mr. Zokaei has
provided all documents requested in the nomination
announcement. While he is currently an ICC member,
upon reviewing his membership history, it was
realized that he does not meet the
nomination criterion of being a regular member with
“good standing for at least one year prior to the
election” as outlined in the by-laws.
According to
the ICC by-laws, candidates, who do not meet the
criterion of being a regular member with good
standing for at least one year prior to the
election, can request for an exemption from the
members. To facilitate such a request, members will
be asked if they are in favour of granting such an
exemption in this election on
the election ballot. If approved by the members,
candidates who are an ICC member but do not meet the
1-year requirement, i.e. Ms. Ghassemi, Ms. Borghei,
Ms. Jamali, Mr. Mobini, Ms. Novin, Ms. Rouhani, Ms.
Tarani and Mr. Zokaei will be exempted, and if
elected, can serve as an ICC director.

Upcoming ICC AGM 2023 and

The ICC board of
directors is pleased to announce that the next ICC
annual general meeting (AGM) will be held on April
9 from 1 PM ET (10 AM PT).
The meeting will be held on a videoconferencing
platform.
An online election
will also be held for the 7 available seats in the ICC
board of directors. We encourage all interested members
to consult with Section 2 of Article 5 of the ICC
by-laws for
nomination eligibility, and if eligible, declare their
nomination by sending an email to elections@iccongress.ca.
The deadline for sending nomination emails is March
23 , 2023, at 11:59 pm ET. The
email must include and attach the following:

A confirmation
by the nominee that he or she has nominated himself
or herself, or that he or she has been nominated by
others and has accepted such nomination,
for election to the ICC board of directors;
-
A confirmation
by the nominee that he/she meets the eligibility
criteria, as set out in Section 2 of Article 5 of
the ICC by-laws;
-
A
government-issued ID; and
-
A synopsis of
the nominee’s background/biographical sketch and the
reasons they wish to serve as a director on
the ICC board of directors (maximum 300 words in
English. Farsi is optional. This information is to
be provided in a MS Word or pdf file format). A
passport size photo of the nominee in digital format
is also optional. Information and the photograph
provided by the nominees will be posted on
the ICC website.
Please note that
only ICC members who have joined/renewed their
membership by March 30,
2023, at 11:59 pm ET will
be entitled to attend the upcoming AGM and vote in the
election. For any membership questions, you may
contact secretary@iccongress.ca.

In the
upcoming election, members will choose seven new
board members. The election will be held online,
starting and ending prior to the AGM. Members will
receive a link through email to participate in the
election after March 30th. Election results will be
announced in the AGM.

The ICC board
of directors has selected an election committee,
consisting of three ICC members, to oversee the
election process. These individuals are: Mr. Kayhan
Razavi, Mr. Habib Ghaffari, and Mr. Reza Sohrabi.

Since the first hours after the earthquake happened in
Khoy,Iran, the Iranian Canadian Congress have reached
out to several organizations to figure out the best
possible ways for Iranian-Canadians to donate and
support the victims of the earthquake in Iran. The ICC
only works with registered Canadian charities that are
helping the earthquake victims through their partnering
NGOs and charities in Iran.

Unfortunately, the earthquake that happened in the Khoy
region has caused many problems for the people in this

On the third anniversary of the downing
of Flight PS752 by the IRGC missiles, we
commemorate the victims of this tragedy
as well as those who were killed in the
recent protests in Iran.
With the recent development in the case
of Flight PS752, we hope that truth will
prevail, and justice will be served for
the flight victims and their families.
The Iranian Canadian Congress reiterates
its solidarity with the Iranian people
and condemns the execution of prisoners
without a thorough investigation and
denying them from the right to have the
lawyer of their choice.
We emphasize once again that human life
is sacred and should be respected. While
Flight PS752 victims and those who lost
their lives back in Iran are not among
us, we will always remember them and
cherish their memory.

Here is a letter from the ICC President, Dr.
Moslem Noori to Conservative MPP Goldie Ghamari regarding
her baseless accusations against the Iranian
Canadian Congress.
Ms.
Ghamari,
On October 26th, while commemorating 40th day of
Mahsa Amini’s horrific death in police custody,
you attacked the Iranian Canadian Congress.
Specifically, you called us “pro-Islamic Regime
lobby group”.
The Iranian Canadian Congress is grassroots,
non-partisan, non-religious, and non-profit
Canadian advocacy organization, supported by
hundreds of members across the country. Your
characterization of the ICC as a foreign
lobbying group is not only patently false, but
also the spreading of misinformation
discriminates against a Canadian civic community
organization.
Despite your views, ICC has issued 3 statements
since September
16th, in
solidarity with Iranian people, particularly
women, who are demanding change, their
fundamental rights, freedom and justice and
condemning violence, oppression and targeted
harassment of the Iranian people's human rights
to peaceful assembly and protest. Many members
of Iranian Canadian Congress have taken part in
various demonstrations across Canada in solidary
with Iranian people in Iran.
When we see our volunteers threatened, our board
members harassed, and our organization’s name
used as a slur in the Legislative Assembly of
Ontario, we must stand and say Enough. This
irresponsible behavior in the past few weeks,
has incited harmful behaviour that resulted in
vandalism of certain Iranian Canadian centers,
verbal attacks, physical abuse and cyberbullying
against individuals such as MP of Richmond Hill,
Majid Jowhari, as well as other organizations in
our community.
At a time when our community should be coming
together, it is disheartening to listen to an
elected official fueling the already tense
situation in our community, rather than trying
to bring people together. Therefore, we ask you
to retract your comments and apologize to the
ICC.
If you have any questions about our
organization's activities and positions in the
future, we ask you to approach us directly
rather than directing accusations against us.

Iranian Canadian Congress requests to
Investigate Corrupt Officials and Embezzlers
from Iran

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of
Canada Honourable David Lametti,
Minister of Public Safety Honourable Marco
Mendicino,
Minister of National Revenue Honourable Diane
Lebouthillier,
With the start of the protests in Iran, the
Iranian Canadian community has renewed its
request to the Canadian government to
investigate cases of individuals who have
accumulated extreme wealth through corruption
and embezzlement in Iran and have fled to
Canada. The Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC) had
previously expressed its concern about such
cases in a letter to
the Canadian government and launched a petition,
supported by thousands of our community members,
asking the government to open an investigation
on the cases of embezzlers, such as Mahmoud Reza
Khavari, using the full power of the Canadian
law including but not limited to anti-money
laundry laws.
Despite such requests on several occasions,
Iranian Canadians have never received any
response, nor has the government taken any
tangible action on this issue. The inaction of
the Canadian government on these cases has
allowed individuals who have enriched themselves
from corruption to evade justice and has damaged
the Iranian Canadians’ trust in the government's
willingness to stand up for the rights of the
Iranian people.
As such, we call on the Canadian government and
the Minister of Justice, the Minister of Public
Safety and the Minister of National Revenue to
do the right thing and finally respond to the
request of our community
by immediately launching investigations through
responsible agencies about the cases of these
embezzlers and corrupt individuals. We are
confident that such an action will be well
received by our community and will reinforce
Canada’s position to stand with the Iranian
people at this difficult time.
Our government and law enforcement agencies must
prevent Canada from becoming a safe haven for
corrupt money and corrupt individuals. Our
government must act now!

terrorist attack in Shiraz, Iran.
15 people including a woman and two children
have been killed and more than 20 people have
also been injured on Oct 26, 2022.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for this
terrorist attack.
We extend our deepest condolences to the
families of the victims and wish speedy recovery
for those injured.

در چند هفته اخیر، شاهد مشارکت بینظیر
جامعه ایرانی کانادایی در ابراز همبستگی
خود با معترضین در ایران بودهایم. حضور
دهها هزار تن در تجمعاتی که در شهرهای
کانادا برگزار شد نشان از دلبستگی اعضای
جامعه مان به سرزمین مادری و کشور عزیزمان
ایران دارد و با وجود عقاید مختلف، قلب
تمامیمان با آرزوی سربلندی ایران میتپد.
در کنار این جلوههای اتحاد و همبستگی،
متاسفانه اتفاقاتی ناگوار مانند آسیب به
برخی از مراکز ایرانی کانادایی، توهین و
حمله به شخصیتهای شناخته شده جامعه مان،
تسویه حسابهای شخصی و حزبی، و اتهامات بیاساس
به برخی افراد نیز به وقوع پیوسته است. در
این زمانه حساس، از همه دعوت میکنیم که
تمرکز خود را بر روی همدلی و همبستگی
بیشتر جامعه مان نهاده و با همافزایی
بیشتر بتوانیم حامی موثرتری برای
هموطنانمان در ایران باشیم.

Over the past few weeks, we have
witnessed an unprecedented wave of
solidarity from the Iranian Canadian
community with protesters in Iran. The
gathering of tens of thousands of people
across Canada demonstrates our
community's attachment to our
motherland. The desire is palpable to
put our political differences aside and
make our hearts beat together in support
of the popular movement in Iran.
On the sidelines of these demonstrations
in defense of the right to free
expression, especially of women in Iran,
we have witnessed here incidents
unworthy of a democratic society like
Canada, such as the vandalism of certain
Iranian Canadian centers, verbal
attacks, physical abuse and
cyberbullying against individuals or
organizations in our community. This
type of behavior is not up to the
struggle that the Iranians are currently
waging. We thus invite our compatriots
to a maximum of empathy, tolerance and
synergy to support and help our
compatriots in Iran.

Au cours des dernières semaines, nous
avons été témoins d’une vague de
solidarité sans précédente de la
communauté irano-canadienne avec les
manifestants en Iran. Le rassemblement
de dizaines de milliers de personnes à
travers le Canada démontre l'attachement
de notre communauté à notre mère patrie.
La volonté est palpable de mettre nos
divergences politiques de côté et de
faire battre nos cœurs à l’unissons en
appui au mouvement populaire en Iran.
En marge de ces manifestations pour la
défense du droit à la libre expression
surtout des femmes en Iran, nous avons
été témoins ici d’incidents indignes
d’une société démocratique comme le
Canada tels que le vandalisme de

Statement on the recent Iran protests September 2022

The Iranian Canadian Congress is deeply
troubled by the situation in Iran and
reiterates its solidarity with peaceful
protestors demanding their fundamental
rights, freedom and justice. We are
devastated to hear about instances of
violence and police brutality that have
claimed tens of lives and left hundreds
of people injured.
The ICC condemns these acts of violence
that threaten the sanctity of life and
jeopardize the Iranian people's human
rights to peaceful assembly and protest.
We strongly condemn targeted harassment
and repression against women in Iran.
We are also deeply concerned by the
state-imposed internet blackouts in Iran
- leaving those in Iran unable to
communicate with the outside world as
well as those in the diaspora unable to
connect with their family and loved ones
during this difficult time.
Thousands of Iranian Canadian community
members have joined the solidarity
protests across Canada. We echo their
calls for freedom, unity, and peace. We
stand with our family, friends, and
fellow Iranians back home.
Le Congrès irano-canadien est
profondément troublé par la situation en
Iran et réitère sa solidarité avec les
manifestants pacifiques réclamant leurs
droits fondamentaux, la liberté et la
justice. Nous sommes dévastés par la
violence de la répression et de la
brutalité policière qui ont coûté la vie
à des dizaines de personnes et blessé
des centaines de personnes.
La CIC condamne ces actes de violence
qui menacent le caractère sacré de la
vie et compromettent les droits humains
du peuple iranien à se réunir
pacifiquement et à manifester. Nous
condamnons fermement le harcèlement
ciblé et la répression contre les femmes
en Iran.
Nous sommes également profondément
préoccupés par les pannes d'Internet

morality police. We wish to extend our
deepest condolences to her family,
friends, and relatives and support them

accountability.

تکذیب دو مورد از ادعاهای اخیر علیه کنگره
ایرانیان کانادا
در هفته های اخیر و در کارزار لغو بازی فوتبال
دوستانه تیم های ملی ایران و کانادا ادعاهای
نادرستی از سوی سخنگوی « انجمن
جانباختگان پرواز ۷۵۲ »
و برخی از اعضای آن در مورد کنگره ایرانیان کانادا
در رسانه ها و فضای مجازی منتشر شد. با انتشار این
تکذیبنامه عمومی، تصمیم گرفتیم در باب این ادعاهای
نادرست مطرح شده اطلاع رسانی کنیم و مراتب را به
اطلاع عموم برسانیم.
ادعای اول: در طول کارزار انجمن برای لغو بازی
فوتبال، سخنگوی این انجمن، آقای حامد اسماعیلیون،
در مصاحبه با چند رسانه بدون ارائه هیچگونه مدرک و
سندی ادعا کرده اند که کنگره ایرانیان کانادا در
ترتیب دادن این بازی نقش داشته و هدف آن از انجام
بازی عادی سازی روابط کانادا و ایران است. کنگره
بدین وسیله اعلام می کند که این ادعا از اساس باطل
و بطور کامل نادرست است.
همانطور که در مصاحبه
ی اخیر رئیس هیات مدیره کنگره ایرانیان کانادا با
رسانه ایران وایر مطرح
شد، کنگره ایرانیان کانادا هیچگونه نقشی چه اجرایی
و چه مشورتی در ترتیب دادن این مسابقه نداشته است.
کنگره خود از طریق فضای عمومی و رسانه های خبری
کانادا از برگزاری این بازی آگاه شد. کنگره پس از
آغاز تلاش انجمن نامبرده و عده ای دیگر از گروه ها
و شخصیتهای سیاسی برای لغو بازی، بیانیه
ای در
استقبال از برگزاری مسابقه ای که اکثریت قریب به
اتفاق بلیط های آن توسط ایرانیان کانادا خریداری
شده بود، منتشر کرد. بر اساس متن اساسنامه و تصریح
آن در باب توسل به شیوه های تنش زدایی، طبیعتاً
کنگره از هر رویداد منجر به تقویت روشهای صلح آمیز
استقبال میکند به ویژه اینکه آن رویداد با حمایت
جمعی ده ها هزار نفر از هموطنان مقیم کانادا نیز
همراه باشد.
باید اضافه کرد همانگونه که در گذشته کنگره
ایرانیان کانادا بطور صریح و شفاف بر این موضع خود
تاکید داشته که قطع روابط کنسولی و دیپلماتیک بین
ایران و کانادا یک اشتباه بوده است که هم به منافع
کانادا و هم به منافع جامعه ایرانی کانادایی آسیب
رسانده است و در این زمینه اقداماتی نیز انجام
داده که همگی رسما و به صورت عمومی اعلام شده است،
در این مورد نیز چنانچه کنگره اقدامی در زمینه
برگزاری این مسابقه انجام داده بود مانند گذشته
بدون هراس از هیچ فرد و گروهی انجام این فعالیت را
نیز به اطلاع اعضای خود و جامعه ایرانی می رساند.
ادعای دوم: سخنگو و برخی از اعضای انجمن نامبرده
کراراً درفضای مجازی و مصاحبه های خود بدون ارائه
هیچگونه سند و مدرکی، ادعاهایی در
زمینه سیاسی بودن اقدامات کنگره مطرح کرده اند که
این نیز تهمتی بی اساس و ادعایی باطل است. پیش از
ایشان نیز این ادعا از سوی گروه های سیاسی بارها
تکرار شده است. تنها شاهد ایشان، تلاش کنگره
ایرانیان کانادا در سالهای اخیر برای ایجاد روابط
دیپلماتیک و کنسولی و همچنین مخالفت کنگره با جنگ
و تحریم است. تلاش های کنگره درباره این موارد
تنها بر اساس خواست اعضای این سازمان و بر پایه
منافع کانادا و جامعه ایرانی-کانادایی است. اصولا
اینکه چه چیزی در جهت منافع حکومت ایران هست و یا
نیست در روند تصمیم گیری کنگره به عنوان یک سازمان
کانادایی جایی ندارد. در آخرین مجمع عمومی کنگره
با اکثریت قاطع اعضا، لزوم فعالیت کنگره در جهت
صلح و گفتگو بین کانادا و سایر کشورها بویژه ایران
به عنوان یکی از وظایف کلیدی کنگره به اساسنامه
سازمان اضافه
شده است. مانند هر سازمان دموکراتیک دیگری هیات
مدیره وظیفه دارد در جهت خواسته اعضا اقدام کند.
اکثریت اعضای این سازمان بر این باورند که گفتگو و
دیپلماسی در جهت منافع جامعه ما و کشور میزبان مان
کانادا است و این باورهیچ ارتباطی به ساختار حکومت
فعلی ایران ندارد.

مصاحبه دکتر مسلم نوری، رییس کنگره ایرانیان
کانادا با رسانه ایران وایر درباره لغو بازی
دوستانه ایران و کانادا
خبر
برگزاری دیدار دوستانه تیمهای ملی ایران و کانادا،
با دو واکنش متفاوت از سوی ایرانیان مقیم این کشور
روبهرو شد.
انجمن «خانوادههای قربانیان پرواز PS752 اوکراین»
برگزاری این مسابقه را تلاشی برای «عادیسازی»
روابط میان جمهوری اسلامی و دولت کانادا دانستند.
در بیانیهها و مصاحبههای اعضای این انجمن اشاره
شده بود که نیروهای سپاه پاسداران، تحت پوشش این
تیم، به کانادا سفر خواهند کرد.
از سویی دیگر، بلیتهای این مسابقه به سرعت توسط
برخی دیگر از ایرانیان مقیم این کشور خریداری شد.
فروش فوری این بلیتها، البته واکنشهایی را هم در
فضای مجازی به همراه داشت.
در این بین، انتقاداتی هم به «کنگره ایرانیان
کانادا» وارد شد. «حامد اسماعیلیون»، سخنگوی انجمن
قربانیان پرواز اوکراینی، در گفتوگو با «ایرانوایر»
گفته بود که پیش از رسمی شدن خبر دیدار تیمهای
ملی ایران و کانادا، خبر برگزاری این مسابقه را از
برخی از اعضای این کنگره و نزدیکان آنها شنیده
بود.
کنگره ایرانیان کانادا پیش از خبر لغو این مسابقه،
از برگزاری این بازی دفاع و پس از اعلام لغو آن،
از این تصمیم انتقاد کرده بود.
«مسلم نوری»، رییس کنگره ایرانیان کانادا در گفتوگو
با ایرانوایر از دیدگاههای این کنگره در برگزاری
و سپس لغو مسابقه گفته است.

به عنوان سوال نخست، در مورد شکلگیری، برنامهها
و اهداف «کنگره ایرانیان کانادا» توضیح دهید.
کنگره ایرانیان کانادا در سال ۲۰۰۷ به عنوان یک
سازمان غیرانتفاعی ثبت شد و آغاز به کار کرد. از
اهداف اصلی این نهاد میتوان به دفاع از منافع
جامعه ایرانی-کانادایی در حوزههای اقتصادی،
اجتماعی، سیاسی و فرهنگی کانادا، بزرگداشت فرهنگ،
هنر، ارزشها و تاریخ ایرانی و نیز ایجاد بستری
برای هماهنگی و همکاری بین بخشهای مختلف جامعه
ایرانی-کانادایی در جایجای کانادا اشاره کرد. این
سازمان بزرگترین سازمان عضومحور در جامعه
ایرانی-کانادایی بوده و اعضای هیات مدیره آن با
رای اعضا در مجمع عمومی سالانه انتخاب میشوند.
طی روزهای گذشته، انتقاداتی از کنگره ایرانیان
کانادا در مورد نقش یا دست داشتن این نهاد در
برگزاری بازی ایران و کانادا شنیده شد. صرف نظر از
اینکه این انتقادات چقدر محق هستند یا خیر، پرسش
ما در مورد اطلاع زودهنگام اعضای این انجمن از
برگزاری دیدار تیمهای ملی ایران و کانادا است؛
کنگره شما، چگونه از برگزاری این دیدار، پیش از
اطلاعرسانی رسمی فدراسیونهای فوتبال ایران و
کانادا و انتشار اخبار مرتبط با این بازی، از
برگزاری آن مطلع شد؟
نمیدانم منشا این ادعا که کنگره اطلاع زودهنگام
از برگزاری این مسابقه داشته، کجاست؛ اما این
ادعای غلطی است. اعضای هیات مدیره کنگره اولین
بار در روز ۱۳ ماه می و پس از اعلام خبر از سوی
فدراسیون فوتبال ایران و انتشار آن در یکی از سایتهای
خبری فارسی ایرانی-کانادایی، از برگزاری این
مسابقه با خبر شدند. برای من جای تعجب دارد که
چنین ادعایی مطرح شده و کسانی که این ادعا را مطرح
کردهاند، بهتر است پاسخگو باشند.
آیا کنگره ایرانیان کانادا، در سالهای اخیر،
روابطی با نهادها، انجمنها یا فدراسیونهای ورزشی
ایران هم داشته است و اگر پاسخ شما مثبت است، لطفا
بگویید با چه فدراسیونهایی، در چه رشتههایی و
برای رسیدن به چه اهدافی در ورزش ایران؟
خیر، در طول یک سال و نیمی که من و سایر همکارانم
در هیات مدیران کنگره بودهایم، ارتباطی با هیچ یک
از فدراسیونها و نهادهای ورزشی ایران نداشتهایم.
تا جایی که من اطلاع دارم، در سالهای پیشتر هم
چنین ارتباطی وجود نداشته است. یکی از اصول اجرایی
ما در کنگره همیشه این بوده است که ارتباط و
همکاری ما تنها با نهادهای دولتی و غیردولتی
کانادایی باشد.
آیا انجمن ایرانیان کانادا در تسهیل برگزاری این
مسابقه دوستانه میان تیمهای ملی ایران و کانادا،
گامی برداشته بود یا خیر؟
خیر، کنگره ایرانیان کانادا هیچگونه نقش اجرایی
یا مشورتی در راستای برگزاری این مسابقه نداشت.
نقطه ورود کنگره به موضوع برگزاری این مسابقه روز
۱۷ ماه می و پس از آن بود که انجمن خانوادههای
قربانیان پرواز ps752 خواهان لغو این مسابقه شدند.
برای بازتاب صدای هزاران نفری که بلیت مسابقه را
در همان ساعات اولیه فروش بلیت، خریداری کرده
بودند و نیز با توجه به تماسهایی که هیات مدیره
از اعضا در خصوص حمایت از برگزاری این مسابقه
دریافت کرد، کنگره با انتشار بیانیهای از
برگزاری این مسابقه استقبال نمود.
در این بیانیه بر نقش مسابقات ورزشی برای گرد هم
آوردن مردم ایران و کانادا حول ارزشهای اخلاق
ورزشی، دوستی، صلح و همبستگی اشاره و بر ضرورت
جدایی سیاست از ورزش تاکید شد.
باید توجه داشت که در مورد برگزاری یا عدم برگزاری
این مسابقه در بین ایرانیان ساکن کانادا اتفاق نظر
وجود ندارد و بسیاری خواهان برگزاری این مسابقه
هستند. خرید سریع بلیت مسابقه توسط هزاران هوادار
تیم ملی گواهی بر این موضوع است. ما در کنگره لازم
دیدیم که صدای این گروه بزرگ باشیم که نهایتا منجر
به انتشار این بیاینه شد.
در بخشی از بیانیهای که کنگره ایرانیان کانادا
در مورد برگزاری دیدار دوستانه در شهر ونکوور میان
تیمهای ملی ایران و کانادا منتشر کرد، میخوانیم:
«هر چند ممکن است چنین تلاشهایی دستاوردهای سیاسی
سطحی و کوتاهمدت بههمراه داشته باشد، اما در
نهایت برپایی چنین رویدادهای بینفرهنگی، کاهش
تعارض، پیشرفت دموکراسی و درک متقابل را در پی
خواهد داشت.» مقصود از «دستاوردهای سیاسی سطحی و
کوتاهمدت» در این بیانیه چیست؟ آیا شما به عنوان
عضوی از این کنگره انتظار دارید که این بازی
بتواند در کوتاه و بلند مدت، دستاوردهای سیاسی و
دیپلماتیک برای هر دو کشور داشته باشد؟
چیزی که به نظر میرسد این است که گروههایی به
دنبال اهدافی سیاسی، مانند آغازی برای تحریم ورزش
ایران و اهدافی فراتر از آن، خواستار لغو برگزاری
این مسابقه هستند. شما اگر سری به شبکههای
اجتماعی بزنید، خواهید دید کسانی که بلیت مسابقه
را خریده و یا کمترین اعلام موافقتی با برگزاری
این مسابقه کنند، هدف انواع و اقسام برچسبزنی و
حتی ناسزاهای بسیار رکیک قرار میگیرند.
اغلب هم این گونه حملات و ناسزاگویی ها از طریق
شناسههای بینامونشان صورت میگیرد. هرچند که
انجمن خانوادههای قربانیان پرواز ps752 و آقای
اسماعیلیون به عنوان سخنگوی این انجمن که درخواست
لغو بازی را برای اولین بار مطرح کردند، تاکنون
واکنشی نسبت به این حملات و ناسزاگوییها از خود
نشان ندادهاند، اما بعید میدانم که موافق چنین
رفتارهایی باشند. فکر میکنم چنین آزار و اذیتهایی
که در فضای مجازی صورت میگیرد، مانعی بر سر راه
درک متقابل، گفتوگو و پیشرفت دموکراسی در جامعه
ایرانی-کانادایی، و جامعه بزرگتر ایرانی است. به
جای پاک کردن صورت مساله و تصمیمگیری گروهی برای
همه، برگزاری چنین رویدادهایی میتواند به ما کمک
تا رفتهرفته از این موانع عبور کنیم و بتوانیم
بدون واهمه عقیده خود را ابراز نماییم.
شخصا به این بازی به عنوان ابزاری برای پیشبرد
روابط دیپلماتیک بین دو کشور نگاه نمیکردم، بلکه
از دید من این یک رقابت ورزشی بود که باید به دور
از حساسیتهای سیاسی و در فضایی صرفا ورزشی برگزار
میشد.
بخشی از اعتراض برخی از اعضای انجمن خانوادههای
قربانیان هواپیمای اوکراینی، به این تفسیر است که
«دیدار دوستانه تیمهای ملی ایران و کانادا» نه
برای آمادهسازی تیم ملی بلکه برای «عادیسازی
روابط سیاسی ایران و کانادا» برگزار میشد. آیا با
توجه به بخشی از بیانیه کنگره ایرانیان کانادا در
مورد «دستاوردهای کوتاه و بلند مدت این مسابقه» که
در سوال پیشین به آن اشاره شد، شما به عنوان عضوی
بلندپایه از این کنگره، «دخالت دادن سیاست در
برگزاری این مسابقه» را موثر نمیدانید؟ آیا از
دیدگاه شما برگزاری این مسابقه، در قدم اول به سود
وزارت خارجه جمهوری اسلامی بود یا تیم ملی فوتبال
ایران؟
گروهها و سیاستمدارانی هستند که میخواستند از
این مسابقه بهرهبرداری سیاسی کنند و به شیوههای
مختلف تلاش کردند که این بازی را سیاسی جلوه دهند.
همانطور که در بیانیه کنگره ایرانیان کانادا
اشاره شده بود، ما مخالف چنین بهرهبرداریهای
سیاسیای هستیم. در عوض، همانطور که پیشتر اشاره
کردم، چنین رویدادهایی فرصتی برای تمرین گفتوگو
بین خودمان، معرفی فرهنگ و ورزش ایران، و نیز
ایجاد پلی بین ایرانیان، به خصوص ایرانیان کانادا
و جامعه میزبان در کاناداست. این تیم، تیم فوتبال
کشور ایران است و چشم امید مردم را به دنبال خود
دارد. همان طور که تیمی که در سال ۱۹۷۸ به جام
جهانی رفت، به عنوان تیم ملی ایران شناخته میشود،
وقتی کسی در آینده از این تیم نام میبرد، آن را
تیم ملی کشور ایران، و نه فرد، سازمان، یا حکومت
خاصی، خواهد نامید. به همین دلیل فکر میکنم که
باید از این تیم حمایت کنیم تا حضوری شایسته در
جام جهانی قطر داشته باشد.
در صورتی که این مسابقه برگزار میشد، برنامه
کنگره ایرانیان کانادا برای روز مسابقه ایران و
کانادا در شهر ونکوور و همچنین میزبانی از کاروان
تیم ملی فوتبال ایران در این کشور چه بود؟
برنامهای از سوی کنگره ایرانیان کانادا برای این
رویداد پیشبینینشده بود. ما امیدوار بودیم که
این دیدار به شکلی باشکوه و درخور هر دو تیم ایران
و کانادا برگزار شود و بتواند تیم ملی را برای
حضور هر چه بهتر در جام جهانی قطر آماده کند.
با توجه به عدم برگزاری این مسابقه، برخی از
رسانههای ایران از آنچه «دخالت سیاست در ورزش
کانادا» خواندهاند، به عنوان دلایل لغو بازی صحبت
میکنند. آیا شما با توجه به سالها زندگی در کشور
کانادا معتقد هستید که فدراسیون فوتبال کانادا زیر
فشارهای سیاسی و غیرورزشی تن به عدم برگزاری این
مسابقه داده است؟
هر چند که فدراسیون فوتبال کانادا سربسته به دلیل
لغو بازی اشاره نموده، اما در بیانیهاش به شرایط
«ژئوپلیتیک» به عنوان یکی از دلایل لغو این بازی
اشاره کرده است. به علاوه، گروه «بنای برث» که یک
گروه لابی حامی اسراییل میباشد، در اطلاعیه اخیر
خود مدعی شده بازی به دنبال شکایت حقوقی این گروه
در دادگاه فدرال کانادا لغو شده است. با کنار هم
قرار دادن این دو مورد، و نیز فعالیت و فشار بسیار
زیاد گروهها و شخصیتهای سیاسی برای لغو بازی،
معتقدم فشارهای سیاسی و غیرورزشی عامل لغو مسابقه
بوده است. این تاییدی است بر ابراز نگرانیای که
کنگره ایرانیان کانادا پیشتر در مورد سیاسی شدن
این مسابقه داشت و خواستار عدم دخالت سیاست در این
مسابقه شده بود.

بررسی چرایی لغو دیدار دوستانه تیم های فوتبال
ایران و کانادا
شروع روابط تیره ایران و کانادا از دهه های اخیر و
به خصوص با بستن سفارتخانههای دو کشور در سال
۲۰۱۲ همزمان بود. پیش دستی کانادا در اکثر موارد
قابل تامل است و نیز هدف قرار گرفتن مردم ایران به
جای دولت ایران قابل درک نیست. سیر حوادث بعد از
تعطیلی سفارتخانههای دو کشور نقاط تاریکی را در
روابط ایران و کانادا به جای گذاشت که همواره بدون
حل شدن یک موضوع حادثه دیگری باعث عميق تر شدن این
جدایی می گردید. حادثه هدف قرار گرفتن هواپیمای
۷۵۲ نه تنها موجبات درد بزرگی بر پیکره جمعی از
بهترین نخبگان ایرانی مهاجر فراهم آورد بل با
قضاوتهای بعضا نادرست باز هم به ضرر جامعه ایرانی
منجر شد. در اینجا قابل ذکر است که مقامات فدرال
کانادا در زمان روی کار آمدن لیبرال ها سعی داشتند
که اصلاحاتی در رابطه با حسن روابط دوجانبه با
ایران انجام دهند که پس از مدتی با فشار
سیاستمداران و احزاب رادیکال عمدتا دنباله رو
سیاست های روز ایالات متحده آمریکا نا موفق بیرون
آمد. حادثه هواپیمای اوکراینی مهم تر از همه تیر
خلاصی بود بر پیکره ناتوان این روابط دوجانبه.
اما با انجام قرعه کشی جام جهانی فوتبال قطر و
همگروه شدن سه تیم ایران آمریکا و انگلیس فرصتی
بسیار دیدنی برای رودررو شدن ورزش در مقابل سیاست
فراهم آمد. در واقع رویدادهای ورزشی از زمان جنگ
جهانی دوم همیشه نقطه درگیری با سیاستمداران تندرو
و متخاصم بود. مثال های زیادی برای این رویدادهای
تاریخی ورزشی وجود دارد که از حوصله این مقاله
خارج است. بازی دوستانه دو تیم فوتبال ایران و
کانادا می توانست پس از ۲۱ سال که از بازی ها در
تورنتو و ادمونتون می گذشت فرصتی مطلوب برای کنار
گذاشتن تخاصم و درک واقیت و قابلیت های رویدادهای
ورزشی می بود. شروعی که به هر حال دير يا زود باید
برای خارج شدن از یک دور باطل صورت می گرفت.
فرصتی که دو فدراسیون فوتبال شاید بهره کافی از آن
نمی بردند أما چه بسا رنگ آرامش به ساز نا کوک
روابط بین دو کشور می داد. فرصتی که در این جهان
نا آرام و در این برهه تخاصم دولت ها فرصتی طلایی
بود. مردم ایران همواره نگاه مغتنمی به شادی جمعی
داشته اند فرصتی که از آنان گرفته شد. بدیهی است
هر چقدر بخوهیم گودال مشکلات در روابط دو جانبه
بین المللی را عمیق تر بکنیم توانایی خروج از آن
کمتر محتمل می نماید. و در انتهای این مقاله
یادآوری می کنم: یک بهانه برای برافروختن آتش تنفر
کافی است و هزاران امید برای رسیدن به صلح و آرامش
کم است.

today by Soccer Canada to cancel the scheduled
friendly match between Canadian and Iranian

As we stated in our earlier statement, we
strongly believe that conflating politics with
sports by politicians and interest groups
contradicts the values espoused by Canada
including peaceful coexistence, democracy, and
friendship.
Thousands of Canadians and members of the
Iranian Canadian community enthusiastically
purchased their tickets in anticipation of this
sold-out match. We believe that Soccer Canada
owes an explanation to these fans about why this
match was cancelled. We also condemn those who
try to create an aggressive and divisive
atmosphere in Iranian Canadian community, and
encourage everyone to promote peace, friendship,
and kindness since these are the core values of
our community.
The Iranian Canadian Congress invites everyone
to embrace the upcoming World Cup as an
opportunity to promote peaceful coexistence and
friendship. Together with millions of Canadian
and Iranian soccer fans, we will cheer for the
success of the Canadian and Iranian national
soccer teams in all cities across Canada.

A friendly soccer match is scheduled between
Canada and Iran at the BC Place Stadium
(Vancouver) on June 5th ,2022 as part of the
preparation games for the upcoming World Cup in
Qatar.
Thousands of Canadians and members of the
Iranian Canadian community have enthusiastically
purchased their tickets in anticipation of
this rare and historic match, already sold out.
This speaks volume to the fact that vast
majority of Canadian and Iranian people favor
friendly relationships symbolically captured by
these types of events. The word “friendly match”
itself symbolizes our people's desire for peace
and friendship abroad and at home.
Friendly international sports competitions have
always had the aim of bringing people together.
This match symbolizes the wish of the Iranian
and Canadian people to come together around the
values of sportsmanship, friendship, peace, and
solidarity. In this regard, the Iranian Canadian
Congress appreciates and supports the decision
and the efforts of the Canada
Soccer organization in hosting this friendly
match. As stated by Canada Soccer: "We believe
in the power of sport and its ability to bring
people from different backgrounds and political
beliefs together for a common purpose.”
Sports, arts, and cultural events are the
channels of interaction and dialogue among
civilizations. We strongly believe that
conflating politics with sports by politicians
and interest groups contradicts the ideals
espoused by Canada, including peaceful
coexistence, and promotion of democracy and
friendship. While such attempts may
produce superficial and short-term political
gains, eventually the preservation of
these intercultural events serves the purpose of
conflict reduction, advancement of democracy,
and mutual understanding.
Iranian Canadian Congress welcomes the upcoming
friendly match and invites the Iranian and
Canadian national teams to observe one-minute
silence to initiate the match in respect and
memory of Iranian-Canadian victims of flight
752.

استادیوم ونکوور در تاریخ 5 ژوئن 2022 به عنوان
بخشی از بازی های تدارکاتی برای جام جهانی آینده
در قطر برنامه ریزی شده است.
هزاران نفر از کانادایی ها و اعضای جامعه ایرانی
کانادایی با اشتیاق بلیط های خود را در انتظار این
مسابقه نادر و تاریخی خریداری کرده اند و همه بلیط
های بازی به فروش رسیده است . این امر گویای این
واقعیت است که اکثریت قریب به اتفاق مردم کانادا و
ایران طرفدار روابط دوستانه ای هستند که به طور
نمادین توسط این نوع رویدادها تسخیر شده است. کلمه
"بازی دوستانه" خود نماد آرزوی مردم ما برای صلح و
دوستی در خارج و داخل است.
رقابت های ورزشی بین المللی دوستانه همیشه با هدف

این بازی دوستانه تقدیر و حمایت می کند. همانطور
که فدراسیون فوتبال کانادا گفته: "ما به قدرت ورزش
و توانایی آن در گرد هم آوردن افراد با پیشینه ها
و عقاید سیاسی مختلف برای یک هدف مشترک اعتقاد
داریم."
ورزش، هنر و رویدادهای فرهنگی، کانال های تعامل و
گفت و گو میان تمدن ها هستند. ما قویاً معتقدیم که
تلفیق سیاست با ورزش توسط سیاستمداران و گروه های
ذینفع با آرمان های مورد حمایت کانادا، از جمله
همزیستی مسالمت آمیز، و ترویج دموکراسی و دوستی،
در تضاد است. در حالی که چنین تلاشهایی ممکن است
دستاوردهای سیاسی سطحی و کوتاهمدت داشته باشند،
در نهایت حفظ این رویدادهای بینفرهنگی در خدمت
کاهش تعارض، پیشرفت دموکراسی و درک متقابل است.

Moslem Noori, the president of the
Iranian-Canadian Congress (ICC), says the
organization has for years tried to get the
government to “resolve this issue,” including
through a 2016 petition that garnered more than
16,000 signatures requesting reestablishing of
diplomatic relations with Iran.
Another campaign in 2021 also saw
Iranian-Canadians email their MPs “asking for
easier access to consular services for Iranian
Canadians.”
“With this,” Noori told NCM,
“hundreds
of Iranian-Canadians sent their concerns to
MPs.”
Yet, nothing has been done about the issue, even
as — or perhaps because — Canada has criticized
the Iranian government over human rights
violations and has initiated United Nations
resolutions against the same.
Meanwhile, the Canadian government continues to
ignore the basic rights of hundreds of thousands
of Iranians across the diaspora in Canada and
creating more difficulties for those in Iran who
are forced to travel to neighboring countries
for the simplest of consular and visa-related procedures
every year.

Resignation of Mr. Younes Zangi-Abadi

The resignation of Mr. Younes Zangi-Abadi, one of the
directors serving on ICC Board for the past 4 years, was
mentioned during the Nowruz meeting of the ICC, on March
31st 2022.
With the resignation of Mr. Younes Zangi-abadi, another
page in the troubling chapter of ICC history during
2018-2020 has been turned.
According to the signed records, Mr. Zangi-abadi ran in
the election for the ICC Board of Directors in April
2018, when he did not have his Canadian citizenship. One
of the conditions for the nomination of Directors is to
be a Canadian citizen. The By-laws were amended in the
2018 AGM to allow an exception, for one director (out of
9) to be a non-Citizen, as long as he/she had a Canadian
Permanent Residency and was not going to serve as one of
the executive roles: President, Vice President,
Treasurer and Secretary (Article 5 – Section2 of the ICC
By-laws)
Interestingly the Board of ICC who put forward the
amendment for this exception, a few days later in their
first meeting after the election, decided to vote Mr.
Zangi-abadi to the position of VP. A disregard for the
amendment that they have just presented in the AGM !
According to the records, Mr. Zangi-abadi continued to
serve as VP until his personal engagements required him
to leave the country and the position of VP was filled
by another board member. Another interesting disregard
for by-laws is that a condition for ICC membership is
that the members be “residing in Canada” – (Article 15 –
Section 1). Mr. Zangi-abadi not only continued to be a
member of the ICC but also remained as a non-executive
director when we he (according to the disposition of the
then president of ICC) was living abroad.
Taking on a volunteer role in an organization like ICC
is challenging and commendable and I would still thank
Mr. Zangi-abadi for the time he spent for his cause,
whatever the cause may have been.
However, and unfortunately, his name will be associated
with one of the bold disregards towards the principles,
by-laws and the laws by the 2018 Board of Directors.
